There have been tons of rumors about Eddie being in talks to star in the Harry Potter spin off and now Variety is confirming that it is indeed true! Here is a bit more info on the possibility of Eddie starring in “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”

Eddie Redmayne has been offered the role of Newt Scamander in Warner Bros.’ “Harry Potter” spinoff “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” according to sources.

As Variety first reported, Redmayne was the front-runner for the role and was intrigued but wanted a finished script before committing. Insiders say that now that the script has been delivered, he is very happy with what he has read.

J.K. Rowling is making her screenwriting debut on the trilogy. Warner Bros. had no comment.

Though director David Yates may be considering a few other actors, it’s looking like Redmayne has the inside track. WB declined to comment on this story.

Set in New York roughly seven decades before Harry Potter’s saga starts, “Fantastic Beasts” is based on the Hogwarts textbook of the same name and follows the adventures of its author, Newt Scamander. Scamander is described as a “magiczoologist,” which in the “Harry Potter” realm is a person who studies magical creatures. Besides Scamander, there are four other main roles — two American girls and two American boys — that the studio is looking to cast.

“Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the ‘Harry Potter’ series but an extension of the wizarding world,” Rowling explained.

Yates and the studio were expected to meet next week for the two female leads but wanted to make sure Redmayne was locked up before those tests began.

He has finished production on Tom Hooper’s “The Danish Girl,” which bows in November. Warner Bros. and Redmayne recently worked together on “Jupiter Ascending,” in which he played the villain opposite Channing Tatum. Though that film failed to meet expectations at the box office, the British thesp is still in high demand following his Oscar win for “The Theory of Everything.”

Redmayne is repped by CAA and United Agents.

April 12, 2015   Ali   Projects Comments Off on Eddie Redmayne Frontrunner for ‘Harry Potter’ Spinoff

The Hollywood Reporter shares the possibility of Eddie participating in the Harry Potter spin off called Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Warner Bros. has zeroed in on Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne for the lead role for Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Harry Potter author JK Rowling is heavily involved in the project and is writing the script.

David Yates is on board to direct the feature project, which is set 70 years before the events of the Potter series and centers on a fictitious author named Newton Artemis Fido Scamander. In Potter lore, Scamander compiled a reference guide to magical beasts, and the movies will follow his adventures after he is commissioned to write the tome.

Redmayne, who would play Scamander, has no offer at this stage but is the studio’s top choice. One thing holding up the process is that the script is still being worked on. Sources say Redmayne won’t commit until he reads it.

Warners had no comment.

Other leads in the movie are two sisters, their parents and a character named Jacob, say sources.

Redmayne is already a studio favorite after chewing up the scenery in Jupiter Ascending (even if the movie didn’t do particularly well at the box office). But his fan base grew even more after he won an Oscar for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

He could be courting an Oscar again with The Danish Girl, the drama he is currently shooting in which he plays transgender artist Lili Elbe.
